Ara Beth Gershengorn
Ara Gershengorn brings extensive courtroom experience to her work at Foley Hoag, both trial and appellate, civil and criminal. At Foley Hoag, she has defended clients in government investigations at the federal and state level, as well as in civil litigation proceedings. In so doing, she relies on her prior government experience as a federal prosecutor and civil appellate counsel. Prior to joining Foley Hoag, Ara was an Assistant United States Attorney where she successfully prosecuted criminal jury trials. She also conducted investigations of fraud, tax crimes, and healthcare and securities law violations, as well as drug and violent crime offenses. Ara also briefed and edited dozens of criminal and immigration matters in the federal court of appeals, and argued before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in cases involving significant sentencing and tax issues.
Before joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Ara was an attorney with the Civil Division of the Department of Justice, briefing and arguing civil and criminal appellate cases in U.S. Courts of Appeals across the country. Ara briefed and argued appeals involving tort liability, immigration matters, liability under the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, and the interpretation of the federal sentencing guidelines. She also was awarded the John Marshall Award for her work defending federal campaign finance legislation. Ara has argued cases in nearly every federal court of appeals across the country. She also briefed bankruptcy and constitutional law cases in the United States Supreme Court.
Ara served as a law clerk for the Honorable Amalya L. Kearse of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
