A native of Malaysia, Alima Joned taught and practiced law in Malaysia prior to moving to the United States in 1991. She is responsible for the firm’s Malaysian practice where, along with area specialists in the firm, she counsels multinational corporations based in Malaysia meeting the many practical and legal challenges of doing business in the United States and beyond. A component of this practice involves advising U.S.-based multinational companies on Malaysian law and regulations, sometimes with local counsel.

Representative Experience

  • Advised foreign companies on the application and implications of U.S. economic sanctions on their operations in certain sanctioned countries
  • Involved in counseling a foreign trade organization on the viability of claims under the GATT arising out of certain provisions in state legislation
  • Represented a company owned by a foreign government in its acquisition of the assets of a U.S. company located in the U.S. and in Belgium
  • Advised a major company owned by a foreign government on sensitive and strategic U.S. legal and political issues related to its proposed acquisition of company based in a third country with operations and a subsidiary in the United States
  • Served as the coordinator of the team that successfully defended a major foreign electricity company against a lawsuit that was filed in the U.S.
  • Advised a company listed on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange on a viability of investment treaty claims against an Asian government
  • Assisted a U.S.-based multinational company in achieving a speedy conclusion of unwarranted criminal investigations in a foreign country
  • Helped nonprofit organizations on formation, corporate governance and general corporate matters
