  • Patent Associate – Chemistry

    December 1, 2020

    Foley Hoag’s Intellectual Property Department has an opening in our Boston or New York office for an associate with an advanced degree, preferably a Ph.D., in Chemistry. 

    We seek applicants with strong academic credentials, excellent verbal and written communication skills.   Both entry-level and experienced candidates will be considered. Experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications in the areas of small molecules, pharmaceuticals, synthetic methods, polymer science and drug discovery would be useful, but is not necessary. A successful candidate who is not a registered patent attorney will be expected to take and to pass the USPTO registration exam within a year of being hired.  Candidates are encouraged to review the USPTO eligibility criteria prior to applying.

    We staff our clients’ patent matters leanly, affording associates an opportunity for significant responsibility and excellent career development. Associates typically work one-on-one with partners, gain a depth of experience in a broad range of patent strategy, drafting, prosecution and diligence matters, and get immediate client contact.     Foley Hoag’s Intellectual Property Department has an opening in our Boston or New York office for a registered patent agent with a Ph.D. in biochemistry, molecular biology, or immunology.

    We seek applicants with strong academic credentials, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and four or more years of patent prosecution experience. Experience in preparing and prosecuting patent applications in the areas of molecular biology, immunology, immunooncology, genetics, and agricultural biotechnology would be particularly useful.

  • Life Sciences Licensing Associate

    October 22, 2020

    Foley Hoag’s Licensing & Strategic Alliances practice group is seeking junior and senior lawyers interested in joining our licensing and collaboration practice in our Boston or New York offices. A background of two or more years in patent licensing in the Life Sciences industry working with biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or medical device companies would be preferred.

    Hands-on experience in any of the following areas would be a plus: drafting and negotiation of complex collaboration agreements, development, manufacturing and supply agreements, sponsored research agreements, clinical trial agreements, and material transfer agreements.

    Foley Hoag’s Intellectual Property Department has an opening in our New York or Boston office for a Patent Agent with a background in Computer Science or a related field such as Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or Information Engineering.  We seek applicants with strong academic credentials, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and 3+ years of patent prosecution experience.  The position will involve representation of a variety of technology companies, ranging from startups to the Fortune 500, in patent prosecution related to software inventions. 

    An M.S. or M.Eng. in a relevant field, or a B.S. in a relevant field plus significant industry experience is preferred.  A general understanding of artificial intelligence concepts is required.  Technical experience in the areas of machine learning, image analysis, cryptography, or software architecture would be particularly useful.

    Foley Hoag’s Life Sciences practice group has an opening in our Boston office for a lawyer with a minimum of eight years of experience representing emerging companies in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and/or medical device sectors.  Ideally, candidates will have experience negotiating and drafting agreements regarding venture capital financings and agreements regarding intellectual property rights, including patent license agreements with universities and collaboration agreements with pharmaceutical companies.  Experience representing clients at board of director meetings, as well as speaking on panels and at conferences is preferred.

    This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney with significant experience representing life sciences companies to play an important role in the expansion of our practice.  Portable billings are not required.
