Webinar: How to Navigate the MA Paid Family & Medical Leave Act
Presented by MassTLC
This program will feature a practical discussion of how to navigate the new PFMLA and the ongoing changes in guidance on the law, as well as what its implementation could suggest about upcoming changes in employment law on the state and federal level.
In August 2018, Massachusetts became the sixth state to adopt a paid family and medical leave law. This new law, the Paid Family and Medical Leave Act (PFMLA), was at the time the most generous paid family and medical leave in the country. It is also one of the broadest, applying to virtually every company with workers in Massachusetts. But despite this broad coverage, the PFMLA has not had an easy path to implementation. It caused so much confusion among employers, workers, and everyone in between that the Governor and General Court had to extend its start date for deductions by three months, until October 1.
Even with this extension, which gave the Department of Family and Medical Leave additional time to finalize its regulations under the new law, additional questions remain, and the Department has continued to issue additional guidance clarifying or changing the interpretation of the PFMLA throughout this time.
