January 7, 2010

Foley Hoag LLP, the  225-lawyer firm based in Boston and Washington, D.C., has announced the appointment of William Kolb, 48, and Adam Kahn, 45, as Co-Managing Partners effective January 1, 2010.  Mr. Kolb and Mr. Kahn, who have a combined total of 40 years of experience at Foley Hoag, both currently serve on the firm’s Executive Committee.

Robby Sanoff, 59, who has been Managing Partner since 2004, will return full time to his litigation practice specializing in environmental and insurance disputes.

“This is a pivotal moment in the history of Foley Hoag,” stated Mr. Sanoff.  “We are passing the firm’s leadership to a new and talented generation of lawyers, and we are confident that they will continue Foley Hoag’s strong tradition of excellence and success.  Bill and Adam have the experience and vision both to strengthen the firm’s core practices and to find innovative new ways to serve our clients,” said Mr. Sanoff.

“As a firm, we play larger than our size.  In our key practice areas, such as life sciences, international disputes, and securities litigation, we have the expertise and bench strength to compete favorably with much bigger firms,” Mr. Sanoff said.  He noted that Foley Hoag now handles more cases before the International Court of Justice than any other law firm in the world, and that in 2007 the firm defended one of the largest accountant liability cases on record.   In the past few years, the firm has launched a series of new initiatives, such as the development of an alternative and renewable energy practice and the opening of the Emerging Enterprises Center in Waltham to service new high tech and life science companies.

Mr. Sanoff noted that while the past year has been a challenging period for the legal industry, “Foley Hoag is well positioned to emerge from these difficult economic times as an even stronger firm.” He continued, “Bill and Adam bring the energy, dedication and skill to turn these demanding market conditions into opportunities for growth and development.  They have been instrumental in adding lateral talent to our international, government strategies, and intellectual property practices in recent months.”  The firm also promoted three associates to partner as of January 1, 2010, and is welcoming its new class of incoming associates, who will join the firm later this month.

Mr. Kolb and Mr. Kahn are optimistic about 2010 and are poised to hit the ground running. “For the past five years, Foley Hoag has sharpened its strategic direction to focus on providing premiere legal services in a number of market-leading practices, including life sciences, high tech, government strategies, accountants’ liability, investment management, government investigations, corporate social responsibility and international disputes,” said Mr. Kolb.  “We see 2010 as an opportunity for us to build on these practices by adding high-quality laterals that expand our expertise and capability to serve our clients.”  Both Mr. Kahn and Mr. Kolb are committed to law firm innovation.  “It is not enough simply to provide legal representation to our clients,” said Mr. Kahn.  “The best law firms must ensure that professional services are also delivered in a business-focused, value-oriented manner.  For example, many clients are interested in alternative fee arrangements, and we offer flexible options that do not sacrifice quality of legal services.  We are also committed to seeing that every new lawyer at Foley Hoag attains the highest level of professional achievement through practical, client-focused training and mentoring programs.”
