Foley Hoag Congratulates Zumix on Receiving National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award

December 15, 2011

Zumix, a recent grantee of The Foley Hoag Foundation, was honored at the White House in November as one of 12 recipients of the 2011 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award.

A nonprofit youth music and arts program located in East Boston, Zumix was chosen from a national pool of more than 470 nominations and 50 finalists for the nation’s highest honor for youth arts programs. First Lady Michelle Obama presented the award at a White House ceremony.

Founded in 1991, Zumix offers free group programs and low-cost individual and group music lessons led by professional staff as well as volunteers from Berklee College of Music. An audio technology program allows students to learn audio engineering and operate sound at live performances. Zumix also offers classes in radio production and maintains an online community radio station where students can host or produce their own shows.

Established in 1980 by the partners of Foley Hoag LLP, The Foley Hoag Foundation is a private foundation that seeks to combat racism, especially among youth, in and around Boston. Grants are awarded to organizations working to improve the city’s racial climate by addressing issues of diversity and racism. The Foley Hoag Foundation was the first — and remains the only — foundation to focus exclusively on the improvement of race relations in Boston. Since 1981, the foundation has awarded $1,735,388 in grants to 267 organizations.

Grantee organizations achieve their goals through a variety of means, including art and cultural activities, youth leadership, and recreational programs. Other grantees provide advocacy assistance, enabling individuals to confront racism through legal or political action. Some grantee organizations work to prepare young children to live in the reality of a multicultural society, others engage teens, and a few target a primarily adult constituency.
