Foley Hoag Congratulates Polaris Partners on Being Named A Top 20 Tech Venture Capital Firm In 2012

April 11, 2013

Foley Hoag congratulates client Polaris Partners on recently being named one of the “Top 20 Most Successful Venture Capital Firms in 2012” by PrivCo, the premier source for business and financial research on major privately-held companies. Polaris was ranked #15 on the list, which is based on the total number of U.S. private tech companies in each firm’s portfolio that were acquired in the last year.

Polaris specializes in seed and early stage investments for a diverse array of companies, including those in the information technology, healthcare and consumer sectors. The firm currently has over $3.5 billion under management and current investments in more than 100 companies. In 2012 Polaris saw 10 successful exits with a total transaction value of $3.2 billion, a record number for the firm. These transactions included the $415 million acquisition by Amgen of deCODE Genetics, which represented a 6.1x return on investment for Polaris, and the sale of WHI Solutions, Inc. to eBay for an undisclosed amount.

"We congratulate Polaris on a very successful year," said Foley Hoag partner Robert Birnbaum. "These numbers reflect Polaris' skill at finding talented entrepreneurs who will prompt positive change and reinforcement in the world’s healthcare and technology industries. We are pleased to have advised the firm on many of their transactions in 2012 and look forward to building on that success in 2013."
