Foley Hoag Attorneys to Present at ABA Section of International Law Spring Meeting
April 1, 2014
Four Foley Hoag attorneys will moderate and speak on panels at the ABA Section of International Law 2014 Spring Meeting, taking place at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City, April 1-5, 2014.
Partner Joseph Basile will serve as a program chair and moderator at the American Bar Association (ABA) Section of International Law Spring Meeting on April 2, 2014. Basile's program, entitled “Made in the U.S.A.: Cross-Border Shareholder Activism,” is sponsored by the ABA's International M&A and Joint Venture Committee.
The program will focus on the international M&A landscape, and explore the extent to which activism is affecting non-U.S.-based companies; the factors that promote or inhibit activist activity in Canada, Europe and Asia; the role of the board of companies in those jurisdictions in responding to activist activity; the role of proxy advisory firms; and potential developments in cross-border activism.
Associate Alexandra Meise will serve as program chair and moderator of a panel entitled “Between a Rock and a Hard Place: Potential Impacts of International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution Trends on Natural Resource and Economic Strategies in Africa and Beyond.” The session, also held on April 2, will examine trends in investor-State arbitration and mineral sector dispute resolution to explore lessons learned from the resolution of recent natural resource disputes.
On April 3, counsel Sarah Altschuller will speak on a panel entitled “Promoting the Rule of Law in the Intersections of Business and Human Rights.” This program will unpack the role of the private sector and the State in fostering the rule of law in development, conflict and post-conflict settings in light of the approach provided by the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
Also on April 3, associate Andrew Orsmond will speak on a panel entitled “Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR): Due Diligence and Reporting.” Participants will provide practical approaches for steering clear of legal risks associated with corporate social responsibility (CSR) due diligence and reporting.
