Two Foley Hoag Attorneys Discuss Legal Issues Facing Start Ups at RightsCon

March 3, 2014

Foley Hoag LLP counsel Sarah Altschuller and associate Vivek Krishnamurthy, both in the firm’s Corporate Social Responsibility practice, will speak jointly on two panel sessions at RightsCon 2014 in San Francisco. The first panel, entitled “Practical Issues Facing Early-Stage Tech Companies,” will highlight best practices for start-ups in protecting the privacy and free speech rights of their users. These best practices are detailed in a forthcoming guide, Managing Users' Rights Responsibly - A Guide for Early-Stage Companies, prepared by Foley Hoag and the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University. The session will feature a Q&A component in which Altschuller and Krishnamurthy will provide practical and actionable advice for start-ups dealing with privacy and free speech challenges.

The second panel, “Holding Your Government to Account: Using the U.N. Universal Periodic Review Process for Digital Rights,” will cover the U.N.’s Universal Periodic Review (“UPR”) process.  Altschuller and Krishnamurthy will offer guidance on how to report on the protection of users’ rights in the context of both the UPR and the U.N. Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

Altschuller will speak on an additional panel entitled “Toward Accountability: Reflecting on ICT Industry Action to Protect User Rights.” Drawing on her experience as an independent assessor for the Global Network Initiative (“GNI”), Altschuller and her fellow panelists will reflect on lessons learned during the first five years of the GNI and identify concrete recommendations for technology companies facing challenges related to the protection of user rights.

RightsCon is being held March 3-5 at Mission Bay Conference Center in San Francisco. The conference brings together human rights experts, investors, corporate leaders, engineers, activists, and government representatives from around the world to advance solutions to human rights challenges in the technology sector.
