October 27, 2014
Foley Hoag attorneys Thomas Bevilacqua and Ivan Urzhumov will serve as panelists at the first Franco-Dominican Conference on International Arbitration, being held October 29, 2014 in Santo Domingo.
Titled "The Effectiveness of Arbitral Awards Rendered Abroad under Dominican and French Law," the event will feature programs addressing issues such as the remedies available to challenge arbitral awards, the recognition and enforcement of arbitral awards and the particular issues that arise when the award in question is one that has been rendered against a State. The conference will feature three roundtables with specialized lawyers sharing their experiences in these matters.
Bevilacqua will deliver a presentation on the subject “The Effectiveness of Foreign Arbitral Award in France, and the Enforcement in France of Awards Set Aside at the Seat of Arbitration,” while Urzhumov will address the topic of “Waiving the Right to Seek the Setting Aside of an Arbitral Award: Its Compatibility with the Right of Effective Access to Justice.” Their fellow panelists will include Sylvain Bollée, Sébastien Manciaux and Jacques-Alexandre Genet, among others.
Bevilacqua and Urzhumov, both resident in Foley Hoag's Paris office, are members of the firm's International Litigation and Arbitration Practice. They are authors of a comprehensive Q&A guide on arbitration law and practice in France published by Practical Law Company (PLC).
The first Franco-Dominican Conference on International Arbitration is being hosted by the Center for Alternative Dispute Resolution of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Santo Domingo, in cooperation with the French Arbitration Committee and the French law research laboratory CREDIMI, and will take place at the premises of the Fundación Global Democracia y Desarollo (FUNGLODE).
