Foley Hoag Launches Specialty Practice Group Devoted to United Nations Legal Representation
October 17, 2016
Foley Hoag LLP recently announced the launch of a new specialty practice group uniquely devoted to the representation of UN Member States and Observer status organizations before the United Nations. The introduction of the practice group precedes United Nations International Law Week, which begins on October 24, 2016.
Chaired by attorney Christina Hioureas, Foley Hoag’s UN practice group provides legal advice and representation to Permanent Missions to the United Nations on matters before the Security Council, General Assembly, Sixth Committee to the General Assembly (Legal Affairs), United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and meetings of the States Parties to the Law of the Sea Convention, among other UN bodies. The first of its kind, the group also serves to advise States on matters before the UN including trade, law of the sea, human rights, international criminal law and international humanitarian law.
"The new United Nations practice group complements our existing public international law practice," said Foley Hoag International Litigation & Arbitration Department Chair Paul Reichler. "We believe sovereign clients will benefit from our advisory work before UN bodies, as well as our representation before international courts and tribunals.”
Foley Hoag's United Nations practice group is supported by the firm's International Litigation & Arbitration Department, which includes more than 30 highly experienced international litigators - based in New York, Washington, Boston and Paris - who represent States regularly before the International Court of Justice, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and international arbitral forums.
Hioureas, who joined Foley Hoag in March, has served as a Special Legal Adviser on the Sixth Committee to the UN General Assembly (Legal Affairs), UNCITRAL, and before other UN bodies. She has extensive experience working on a range of international law issues involving Southern Europe and the Balkans, the Caucasus, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America.
