Former Foley Hoag Attorney Alicia Barton Named President and CEO of NYSERDA
June 26, 2017
Former Foley Hoag LLP counsel Alicia Barton, who co-chaired the firm's Energy & Cleantech practice, was nominated by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to assume the role of President and CEO of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).
NYSERDA is the key implementing agency for Governor Cuomo’s clean energy agenda, and is charged with converting New York’s economy to 50 percent renewable energy by 2030 - the most ambitious renewable energy mandate in the nation.
Barton's nomination was presented to the NYSERDA Board of Directors on June 26, at which time they voted on the resolution naming her President and CEO.
In her new role, Barton will lead all aspects of NYSERDA’s operations, including implementing strategic plans to bolster clean energy development, enhance New York’s competitiveness for clean energy businesses, and make the state’s energy systems more resilient and reliable.
"We congratulate Alicia as she begins this new chapter in her career," said Adam Kahn, Co-Managing Partner and member of Foley Hoag’s Energy & Cleantech practice. " Throughout her tenure at Foley Hoag, Alicia's in-depth knowledge and background as a renewable energy leader benefitted our clients. We look forward to her many successes at NYSERDA."
At Foley Hoag, Barton helped clients navigate the rapidly evolving regulatory and market conditions pertaining to energy and clean technology. The firm’s Energy & Cleantech practice counsels hundreds of energy and cleantech clients at every stage of their business growth through an array of activities and transactions, including corporate and venture financings, mergers and acquisitions, project structuring and finance, energy regulatory and environmental permitting and compliance matters, strategic partnerships and joint ventures, tax issues, intellectual property and real estate.
"Alicia is a brilliant energy lawyer and thinker, a practical and effective leader and a passionate warrior for a clean energy future," said Mark Barnett, co-chair of Foley Hoag's Energy & Cleantech practice. "We fully support her decision to assume this new role and think that the State of New York could not have found a better person for the important and challenging task at hand."
Since 1975, NYSERDA has promoted energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources in New York State, and advanced innovative energy solutions in ways that improve New York's economy and environment. Its efforts aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, accelerate economic growth, and reduce customer energy bills.
