Foley Hoag Attorney Christina Hioureas to Address U.N. on Effects of Rising Sea Levels
May 16, 2017
Foley Hoag LLP counsel and United Nations practice chair Christina Hioureas will address the United Nations (U.N.) on May 17 during the 18th Open-Ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea, taking place at U.N. headquarters in New York. The event, which will serve as a forum for an exchange of views by legal and scientific experts around the globe on the “The Effects of Climate Change on Oceans,” is co-chaired by Ambassadors Gustavo Meza-Cuadra and Kornelios Korneliou of Peru and the Republic of Cyprus, respectively.
Hioureas will discuss the effects of climate change and rising sea levels on maritime entitlements, with emphasis on baselines, maritime features and resulting questions of Statehood. She will focus, in particular, on the new legal frontier with respect to defending the rights of low-lying coastal and small-island States.
As a member of Foley Hoag's International Litigation and Arbitration Department, Hioureas represents States, private and State-owned entities, and individuals on international disputes and public international law matters, and also advises States on matters before the U.N. and its bodies.
Created in 1999 by the U.N. General Assembly, the Open-Ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea was established to facilitate an annual review of developments in ocean affairs and the law of the sea by suggesting particular issues to be considered, with an emphasis on identifying areas where coordination and cooperation at the inter-governmental and inter-agency levels should be enhanced.
