Foley Hoag Attorney Patricia Cruz Trabanino to Speak at International Law Conference
November 13, 2018
Foley Hoag LLP associate Patricia Cruz Trabanino will speak at the “Rethinking Reparations in International Law” conference, taking place November 16-17, 2018 at the University of Cambridge in England. The conference is organized by the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law and the Athens Public International Law Center.
Cruz Trabanino will present a paper titled “Intangible but No Less Real – Moral Damages Suffered by a State in Investor-State Arbitration,” arguing against the view that non-monetary satisfaction is the only remedy available to States who have suffered direct moral damage. She will examine the use of monetary compensation as an available remedy, and will use, as a case study, respondent States in investor-State arbitration who suffer quantifiable losses resulting from damage to their reputation caused by the filing of fraudulent claims.
As a member of Foley Hoag’s International Litigation and Arbitration Department, Cruz Trabanino advises sovereign States in investor-State disputes and public international law matters. She represents clients in arbitrations initiated under international investment agreements before the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes, and also represents sovereign States in U.S. federal court proceedings and in advisory matters concerning international law.
The Lauterpacht Centre for International Law at the University of Cambridge provides a framework and forum for critical and constructive thought about the function, content and working of law in the international community. The Athens Public International Law Center is a leading research organization committed to the study and promotion of international law.
