Foley Hoag Associate Dr. Alejandra Torres Camprubí to Participate at Environmental Dispute Resolution Conference
September 7, 2018
Foley Hoag LLP associate Dr. Alejandra Torres Camprubí will be a featured speaker at the Environmental Dispute Resolution and Small States conference in London on September 6-7, 2018.
The event will bring together representatives of Small States, government officials, academics and NGOs, as well as lawyers who are involved in dispute resolution in or for Small States. Attendees will explore how international environmental dispute resolution can be used to combat climate change or environmental degradation, and discuss how Small States can obtain reparation for suffered environmental and/or climate change damage.
Torres Camprubí will speak on “Dispute Resolution and Sinking Island States” as part of a panel on procedure and substance in environmental dispute resolution. Her presentation will examine the historical role of islands and island states in international law, and will explore whether what is often referred as the 'sinking island paradigm' (the threat of loss of statehood due to sea-level rise) may give rise to concrete, judiciable legal disputes before international courtrooms. The importance of diplomatic and political avenues to adress this unprecedented challenge to international legal subjectivity will also be highlighted.
As a member of Foley Hoag's International Litigation & Arbitration Department, Torres Camprubí's practice is focused on public international law, investor-State arbitration, maritime and land boundary disputes, and the International Court of Justice.
The Environmental Dispute Resolution and Small States conference is organized by WilmerHale and the Small Islands Center.
