Vivek Krishnamurthy Joins Foley Hoag's Corporate Social Responsibility and Privacy & Data Security Practices
Attorney Returns to Firm After Previously Serving as Asst. Director at Harvard Law School
September 10, 2018
Foley Hoag LLP has welcomed the return of Vivek Krishnamurthy as counsel in the firm’s Corporate Social Responsibility and Privacy & Data Security practices. Krishnamurthy rejoins the firm from Harvard Law School’s Cyberlaw Clinic, where he spent the last four years developing an innovative technology law and human rights practice.
Krishnamurthy will concentrate his practice on the complex regulatory and rights-related challenges facing businesses that operate across borders, both in cyberspace and in real space.
At the start of his career, Krishnamurthy spent four years as an associate in Foley Hoag’s Corporate Social Responsibility and International Litigation & Arbitration practices, advising a wide range of companies on the human rights implications of their activities and representing sovereign clients in disputes before U.S. and international courts.
“We are pleased to welcome Vivek back to the firm,” said Foley Hoag Co-Managing Partner Kenneth Leonetti. “His academic expertise and decade of legal experience will be a considerable asset in helping our clients maximize their positive social impact while minimizing their legal and reputational risk.”
Krishnamurthy specializes in advising organizations that are developing or deploying innovative technologies on the conflicting legal obligations they often face, and on the fast-changing expectations of users, regulators, and other stakeholders regarding privacy, cybersecurity, and respect for the full spectrum of civil and political rights.
Krishnamurthy most recently served as the Assistant Director of Harvard Law School’s Cyberlaw Clinic. His teaching and clinical practice focused on the human rights impacts of emerging technologies and on the challenges of applying conflicting national laws to regulating the global internet. He also supervised clinical students representing clients in counseling and contentious matters implicating U.S. and foreign privacy laws, data- and cybersecurity best practices, and other emerging tech policy issues.
Krishnamurthy earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto, a Juris Doctorate from Yale Law School, and a Master of Philosophy degree from St. Antony's College, Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He is an affiliate of the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University and a Lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School, where he teaches Counselling & Legal Strategy in the Digital Age.
