March 4, 2019
Foley Hoag LLP has once again been given the top ranking in Public International Law by Chambers and Partners Global 2019. This marks the seventh time in nine years the firm has been ranked in Band 1, the highest rating provided by Chambers Global.
The firm also earned a Band 2 ranking in Business & Human Rights Law, Band 3 ranking in Arbitration (International) and Band 4 ranking in International Arbitration (USA).
In the Public International Law category, Chambers Global reports that, according to clients, "Foley Hoag LLP stands out because of its high level of competence and admirable record of cases handled and won… With regard to Law of the Sea issues, there is no other law firm better."
Another client noted: "[Foley Hoag’s] performance is stellar, unequalled and impeccable. Their attention to detail, grasp of principles, team spirit, willingness to understand the peculiarities of developing country government needs, and customer care set them apart."
Partner Paul Reichler, who chairs Foley Hoag's International Litigation & Arbitration Department, was singled out by Chambers Global as a “Star Individual” – a new ranking given to lawyers with exceptional recommendations in their field.
“He is a brilliant lawyer, a natural leader and a great manager,” one client said. “Using his vast experience in international arbitration and deep knowledge on Law of the Sea, Mr. Reichler led the team in coming up with effective legal theories, responsive legal strategies and outstanding legal briefs.” Reichler was also ranked under Arbitration (International) – Latin America-wide and Corporate & Finance.
Partner Lawrence Martin, who serves as Deputy Chair of the International Litigation & Arbitration Department, received strong praise for his work representing sovereign states in public international law disputes. Interviewed clients stated his “calm demeanour and level-headedness make him the best person to have on your side during confusing times,” and that his “knowledge and expertise on Law of the Sea is exceptional."
Partner Mark Clodfelter was recognized for his work in public international law as sovereign-side counsel in investment treaty arbitrations, drawing on his experience as former assistant legal adviser for international claims and investment disputes at the U.S. Department of State.
In addition, the following attorneys were recognized by Chambers Global within their respective areas of proficiency: Alberto Wray, Dispute Resolution – Ecuador and Litigation – USA ("very good understanding of Latin American matters"); Andrea Pinna, Dispute Resolution: International Arbitration – France; Hery Frédéric Ranjeva, General Business Law – Madagascar; and Daniel Schimmel, Foreign Expertise in France for International Arbitration – USA (“incredibly bright and hard-working”).
