October 10, 2019

Former U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) senior counsel John W. R. Murray has joined Foley Hoag LLP as partner, resident in the New York office. He will be a member of the firm's Securities Litigation and White Collar/Government Investigations practices.

Murray will focus primarily on government and corporate internal investigations, securities and commercial litigation and related compliance matters.

Before joining Foley Hoag, Murray was senior counsel in the SEC's Division of Enforcement. During his 10-year tenure within the agency, he worked on a broad range of investigations and litigations involving insider trading, obligations of asset managers under the Investment Advisers Act and Investment Company Act, regulation of complex structured financial products, and broker-dealer regulation.

“With his extensive background in the government sector and lengthy career with the SEC, John is uniquely qualified to assist our securities and white collar clients,” said Foley Hoag Co-Managing Partner Kenneth Leonetti. “We enthusiastically welcome him to the firm.”

As a former program director for an international non-governmental organization, Murray also has considerable experience in legal issues relevant to the developing world, with an emphasis on anti-bribery and anti-corruption. In addition, he previously worked in private practice on a wide variety of litigation and investigative matters, including corporate internal investigations, white collar matters, securities class actions and commercial litigation.

“We are excited to have John join our team of leading, widely recognized litigators,” said Lisa Wood, partner and Co-Chair of Foley Hoag’s Litigation Department. “His high level of experience will not only benefit our New York-area clients, but national ones as well. I look forward to collaborating with him on matters handled in all of our offices.”

Murray earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dartmouth College and a Juris Doctorate from Fordham University School of Law.
