Foley Hoag Joins ACLU of Louisiana Litigation Campaign Against Racist Policing Practices

June 24, 2020

Foley Hoag LLP and 16 private law firms have joined the ACLU of Louisiana’s litigation campaign to challenge racially discriminatory policing practices in the wake of the killings of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Rayshard Brooks and many named and unnamed others.

The initiative, called “Justice Lab: Putting Racist Practices in Policing on Trial,” seeks, over time and in a sustained fashion, to bring up to 1,000 cases in Louisiana challenging racially motivated stops and seizures under the Fourth and Fourteenth Amendments and any other applicable laws. Louisiana has the highest incarceration rate in the world and the ratio of police officers to residents is the highest of any state in the country. By focusing intensive efforts on a single state, Justice Lab aims to test the impact that litigation has on police conduct.

"Foley Hoag is proud to join the ACLU of Louisiana and these notable firms from across the country in this extremely crucial mission as we collectively attempt to combat deep-rooted racism and address societal inequities," said Foley Hoag Co-Managing Partner Kenneth Leonetti. "It is important to remember our common values and concerns, and to stand in opposition to bigotry, hatred, and violence. As a firm that has long prided itself on speaking out and taking action against injustice, Foley Hoag will continue to work with our community and legal partners to promote positive change not only in the cities in which we live and work, but also in society at large."

In addition to Foley Hoag, the ACLU of Louisiana’s Justice Lab campaign partners include law firms Akerman; Barrasso Usdin Kupperman Freeman & Sarver; Cohen & Gresser; Cooley; Covington & Burling; Durie Tangri; Holwell Shuster & Goldberg; King & Spalding; Kuchler Polk Weiner; Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe; Proskauer Rose; Reid Collins & Tsai; Simpson Thacher & Bartlett; Steptoe & Johnson; Susman Godfrey; and Venable.
