Foley Hoag Attorney Juan Pablo Hugues Earns First Place Honors in Guillermo Aguilar-Álvarez International Essay Competition

November 5, 2020

Foley Hoag LLP international associate Juan Pablo Hugues earned first place honors in the Guillermo Aguilar-Álvarez International Essay Competition on Arbitration, sponsored by Mexico’s Centre of Arbitration (Centro de Arbitraje de México, “CAM”).

The first place recognition is awarded to one individual under the age of 40 who has written the best published work on international arbitration, conciliation or other forms of dispute. This year, 39 authors from 12 different jurisdictions participated in the competition.

Hugues' essay, entitled "Guillermo Aguilar Álvarez y el Arbitraje de Inversión: Un Ciclo Completo," (translation: "Guillermo Aguilar Álvarez and Investment Arbitration: A Full Cycle,") focuses on Guillermo’s role in the consolidation of the modern system of investment arbitration, as Mexico’s Chief negotiator for the NAFTA, and on the current resistances faced by such system, namely by USMCA and UNCITRAL’s Working Group III on Reform of ISDS, and reflects on the future of the system.

The competition was created in honor of the late prominent international arbitration attorney, Guillermo Aguilar-Álvarez, Mexico’s chief attorney negotiator of NAFTA.

Hugues is a member of Foley Hoag's International Litigation & Arbitration practice. He represents sovereign States in international disputes and advises them on public international law.
