Foley Hoag Partners Clara Brillembourg and Tafadzwa Pasipanodya Recognized by Latinvex as Top Female Lawyers Specializing in Latin America
October 8, 2020
Foley Hoag LLP partners Clara Brillembourg and Tafadzwa Pasipanodya were recently named to Latin America's Top 35 Female Lawyers in Arbitration & Litigation and Top 100 Female Lawyers (2020) by Latinvex, a publisher of daily news and weekly analysis on Latin American business.
Each year, Latinvex selects the top 100 international female lawyers in Latin America by areas of specialty and expertise. The criteria for selection includes a combination of factors, including regional and local prominence, law firm prominence, and awards and recognition from sources such as Chambers and Partners, Legal 500 and Thomson Reuters.
This marks the fourth consecutive year in which Brillembourg has been recognized for her expertise. Latinvex highlights her successful representation of sovereign States before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in disputes involving territorial rights, human rights and environmental harm. It also calls attention to her recent victories in international investment arbitration, including representing Uruguay in an ICSID arbitration brought by Italba Corporation and a $4 billion PCA arbitration brought by UK nationals – both resulting in denials of jurisdiction and cost awards. It also highlighted her work leading the Foley Hoag team advising the Government of Peru in its requests to the United States government for the extradition of former President Alejandro Toledo and other high profile individuals involved in the Odebrecht bribery scheme.
Latinvex lauded Pasipanodya's "key work" in Latin America, which includes serving as counsel to Uruguay in an UNCITRAL arbitration concerning a $4 billion claim by an iron ore mining company, securing a judgment and a cost award in favor of Uruguay; serving as counsel to El Salvador in a dispute before ICSID concerning gold mining and environmental rights, securing a favorable judgment and cost award for El Salvador; and helping win victories for Venezuela in several other investment arbitrations concerning gold, diamond, nickel, and coal mining. Pasipanodya had previously been named by Latinvex as one of the Top 50 Rising Legal Stars specializing in Latin America.
Both Brillembourg and Pasipanodya are partners in Foley Hoag’s International Litigation & Arbitration practice.
