Former NY State Chief Deputy Attorney General and Chair-Elect of the Board of the NYC Bar Association Harlan Levy Joins Foley Hoag as Partner
May 10, 2021
Former Chief Deputy Attorney General of New York and Chair-Elect of the New York City Bar Association Board, Harlan Levy has joined Foley Hoag LLP as a partner and Co-Chair of the State Attorney General practice. He is resident in the firm’s New York office and will help expand Foley Hoag’s State Attorney General Investigations, white collar crime and other litigation capabilities.
Levy is an accomplished litigator, successfully handling many high profile matters involving white collar criminal defense, state AG investigations, and business litigation cases throughout his extensive career. During his tenure as Chief Deputy Attorney General of the State of New York, he oversaw many of the office’s most significant civil and criminal investigations including those stemming from mortgage-backed securities. Levy significantly builds on Foley Hoag’s existing White Collar Crime & Government Investigations practices in New York, while continuing to handle prominent cases regarding FinTech and cryptocurrency.
“Foley Hoag is pleased to be expanding its New York office with the addition of Harlan Levy,” said Foley Hoag Co-Managing Partner Kenneth Leonetti. “Harlan’s impressive experience serving as the second-ranking official in the New York State Attorney General’s Office, along with his knowledge, expertise and business acumen, will bring wide-ranging benefits to our clients and colleagues.”
Earlier in his career, Levy served as an Assistant District Attorney in the Major Offense Bureau of the Manhattan DA’s Office, where he was an accomplished trial lawyer and tried 18 felony jury cases to verdict and earned 17 convictions. He also clerked for Judge Leonard Moore of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Most recently, Levy has been appointed Chair-Elect of the Board of Directors of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, and been named one of New York City and State’s most influential lawyers in 2021. His leadership has been recognized with the John J. McCloy Award from the Fund for Modern Courts and Citizens Union’s Public Service Award.
“Harlan is at the top of his legal generation for integrity, intellectual rigor and wise analysis of complex issues,” said Lance Liebman, the William S. Beinecke Professor of Law Emeritus and Dean Emeritus at Columbia Law School. “In his practice, whether in public service or representing private clients, Harlan has always demonstrated that most important attribute of great lawyers: impeccable judgment. As Chief Deputy Attorney General of New York, he managed a large and complicated organization with offices all over the state. All of this is why he has now been selected to chair the New York City Bar Association and why I am excited for this unique opportunity with Foley Hoag.”
Before joining Foley Hoag, Levy was a partner with Boies Schiller Flexner. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Amherst College and a Juris Doctorate from Columbia Law School where he served as a Charles Evans Hughes Fellow.
