Noted energy and environmental attorney Shailesh Sahay has joined Foley Hoag LLP as counsel in its Energy & Climate practice. He is resident in the Washington, D.C. office.
Sahay directs legal and policy strategy on climate and sustainability at the federal, state and international levels. He represents clients in the renewable fuels sector and a variety of industries, helping them shape laws through legislative and regulatory advocacy, then helping them maximize value under established legal frameworks by obtaining regulatory approvals and ensuring regulatory compliance.
“Shailesh is a leading energy and environmental attorney and advocate in the renewable fuels and clean energy sectors, whose work has had significant and highly effective national and global reach,” said Mark Barnett, co-chair of Foley Hoag’s Energy & Climate practice and the firm’s Business Department. “We welcome Shailesh to the firm and are confident that our clients will greatly benefit from his extensive experience with energy and climate law.”
Prior to joining Foley Hoag, Sahay was Senior Regulatory Counsel at POET, one of the world's largest producers of biorefined products, and a leader in the sustainable energy industry. As lead D.C. attorney at POET, he developed regulatory and legislative positions on federal and state law and led complex negotiation that resulted in an increase of renewable fuel limits under EPA regulations, from 10 to 15%. Prior to his time at POET, Sahay spent eight years in private practice as an environmental lawyer at multinational law firms.
Sahay earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Earth and Planetary Sciences from Harvard College and his Juris Doctorate is from Harvard Law School. He is a member of the Environmental Law Institute's Leadership Council, and is secretary and on the board of directors of the Low Carbon Fuel Coalition.
