Derek Schaffner has joined Foley Hoag LLP as counsel in its Licensing & Strategic Alliances practice and Technology industry group, where he will help clients on legal and business issues associated with complex technology transactions and outsourcing engagements. He is resident in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office.
Schaffner’s practice focuses on cloud computing, SaaS, data privacy, information technology sourcing, application development and maintenance, software and systems implementation, business process transactions, integrated facilities management, third party logistics, and licensing. He also advises clients regarding intellectual property, information technology, and data security issues in M&A transactions, including due diligence and the negotiation of terms for those items in purchase agreement.

Previously, Schaffner was counsel in the Washington, D.C. office of Foley & Lardner. Prior to practicing law, he held senior management positions at Microsoft, Xerox, and Accenture. Schaffner earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and Master of Business Administration degree from the University at Buffalo, a Master of Science degree from the University of Rochester and a Juris Doctorate from Cornell University.
