Ivan Urzhumov, a counsel in the firm’s Paris office, focuses his practice on international arbitration and litigation. He has experience working on commercial and investment arbitration cases under ICC, ICSID and UNCITRAL rules. Ivan’s practice also encompasses international litigation, including recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments and arbitral awards, taking of evidence abroad and obtaining conservatory measures in support of cross-border proceedings.

Representative Experience

  • Murphy Exploration and Production Company International v. The Republic of Ecuador
    Assisted in obtaining a nearly unprecedented victory for The Republic of Ecuador, achieving dismissal of this international treaty arbitration at the jurisdictional stage. Claim was initiated by an international oil company alleging breaches of multiple provisions of the U.S.-Ecuador bilateral investment treaty arising from the Republic’s imposition of a windfall-profits levy on certain oil operations in Ecuador. Matter involved damage claims in excess of US $200 million.
  • International Company for Railway Systems, and The Privatization Holding Company (Kuwait) v. The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan
    Representation of the Kingdom of Jordan in ICC arbitration brought by a railway company and its Kuwaiti shareholder concerning a bilateral investment treaty and novel issues of jurisdiction between ICSID and the ICC.
  • Successful defense of an Eastern European State in French court proceedings initiated by a Luxembourg-based company seeking the seizure of our client’s bank accounts and other assets as means of enforcing an SCC arbitral award rendered against a State-owned entity in the agricultural sector.
  • Representation of a client in multiple French trial court and appellate proceedings relating to the enforcement in France of a large arbitral award issued against an Eastern European State-owned entity. In this multi-pronged battle, the firm has been successful in obtaining and defending the seizure of the debtor’s shareholding rights in a large telecommunications company. 
  • International Commercial Arbitrations - Ivan has acted as counsel in commercial arbitrations relating particularly to the energy, telecommunications and waste management sectors. His recent experience includes the following cases:
    • Acting for a North African public utility in an ICC arbitration against a foreign contractor involving a large-scale infrastructure project in the electricity sector. 
    • Counsel to a pan-European recycling company set up by several leading producers of electrical and electronic equipment in two separate ICC arbitration proceedings against German and French logistics service providers. 
    • Representing a large French electricity player in an ICC arbitration against a European electricity trader and distributor. 
    • Advising an international petroleum corporation concerning tax claims raised by an African State under the production sharing agreements.

Professional Experience

  • Before moving to Paris, practiced in the field of commercial and civil litigation in Russia as an associate at Magisters law firm. Also advised clients on Russian corporate and commercial law.
