Joseph Klingler will teach a module on “Treaty Interpretation” at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, starting November 2022. The course will explore treaty interpretation in theory and practice, focusing on the rules codified in the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties. Students will be able to apply the rules, and understand and be able to discuss the task of treaty interpretation, and the inevitability of challenges and criticisms levelled against the task.
Klingler is a member of the firm's International Litigation & Arbitration Department. His practice focuses on the representation of sovereign States and State-owned entities before the world's principal dispute resolution bodies, including the International Court of Justice and arbitration panels administered under the ICSID and UNCITRAL Rules.
He will co-author the third edition of Oxford University Press’ preeminent
Treaty Interpretation alongside Professor Richard Gardiner, the author of the first and second editions. The book is generally considered to be the world’s leading treatise on the subject of treaty interpretation, and Professor Gardiner the leading authority on it.
