Arbitrating with International Organizations

October 26, 2024

Christina Hioureas will speak on a panel on “Arbitrating with International Organizations” during International Law Weekend 2024.

As the United Nations International Law Commission (ILC) embarks upon its study on the ‘Settlement of disputes to which international organizations are parties’, States and international organizations are sharing novel information on the nature of their dispute resolution practices with international organizations. Such practices range from negotiations to conciliation and judicial proceedings, with varying degrees of success. To contribute to the ongoing debate on an asserted accountability gap, this panel will shed light on a mode of dispute settlement that often takes place behind closed doors: arbitration. Composed of speakers from the ILC, international institutions, States and law firms involved, the panel will discuss the conditions under which arbitrating with international organizations can result in effective dispute settlement.
