Christina Hioureas was quoted in an article in Global Arbitration Review on the recent Advisory Opinion issued by the International Court of Justice on the obligations of states with respect to climate change. Hioureas discussed the ICJ’s confirmation that states are required to regulate activities of both public and private actors under their climate obligations. “Indeed, the opinion signals that state measures regulating the conduct of private actors in connection with climate change is not only permissible but required under international law, thereby recalibrating the balance between investment protection and states’ duty to protect human rights and the environment.”
