Aaron Lang, a partner in Foley Hoag's Energy & Climate Industry Group, was featured in a recent Canary Media article examining Massachusetts' efforts to accelerate battery energy storage development through ambitious deployment targets and supportive policy reforms.
In the article, Lang highlighted the importance of the state's Clean Peak Standard, noting that the program's incentives can be key to project economics. "Those credits are incredibly important to financing and developing these projects," he said.
Lang also discussed the impact of Massachusetts' recently enacted siting and permitting reforms, which are designed to streamline approvals for large-scale energy infrastructure. He noted that the state's evolving regulatory framework is helping attract developers and investment, adding: "The policy framework in place is certainly having an influence on bringing developers to Massachusetts. It holds a lot of promise."
While acknowledging challenges remain, including interconnection costs and others, Lang expressed confidence in the sector's future growth, concluding: "I am optimistic that the challenges can be overcome."
The article, ‘Massachusetts Sets Big Battery Goals — and the Policies to Back Them Up’, discusses how Massachusetts is positioning itself as a national leader in energy storage deployment as it pursues a goal of 10 GW of battery capacity by 2035.
