Foley Hoag Partner Thomas Barker to Speak at Medical Devices Manufacturers Association Annual Meeting

Presentation will focus on healthcare in the 21st century

Foley Hoag partner and healthcare policy expert Thomas Barker will be a featured speaker at the Medical Devices Manufacturers Association’s Annual Meeting on April 17 in Washington, D.C. Barker will detail what companies must do to overcome obstacles that may emerge in healthcare in the 21st century.

Barker will present with Paul LaViolette, partner at SV Life Sciences, on a panel entitled “Healthcare in the 21st Century - Demonstrating Value.” With increasing focus on healthcare costs, it has become critical for all parties involved to demonstrate value. These two intellectuals in the healthcare industry are expected to discuss what medical device companies must do to succeed in this environment, and address new hurdles that may emerge.

Barker serves as co-chair of Foley Hoag’s Healthcare Practice and is a veteran of public healthcare policy. His practice focuses on complex federal and state health care legal and regulatory matters, with a special emphasis on Medicare and Medicaid law and regulations.

Prior to joining the firm, Barker was acting general counsel at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and general counsel of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Serving in the Bush Administration, he played a key role in the implementation of every major health policy initiative enacted during his tenure, including the Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit (Medicare Part D) and Medicaid modernization.
