Foley Hoag Partner Mary Beth Gentleman Honored by New England Women in Energy and the Environment

Foley Hoag LLP Partner Mary Beth Gentleman was the recipient of an Achievement Award for her leadership in the energy industry by New England Women in Energy and the Environment (NEWIEE) at its Third Annual Awards Gala on May 8 in Boston.

The event, anchored by a special keynote address from Commissioner Cheryl A. LaFleur of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, celebrated professionals who have had a major impact on issues of critical importance in the energy and environmental fields. Honorees were selected by a committee of their peers from a wide pool of well-qualified and accomplished nominees from across New England. They were selected based on criteria such as demonstrating professional excellence and leadership, influencing public policy, developing new concepts and mentoring other women in their area of expertise.

Gentleman co-chairs Foley Hoag’s Energy & Cleantech practice. As Assistant Secretary of Energy in Massachusetts,  she was instrumental in the establishment of new power purchasing requirements which led to the creation of competitive markets for electricity generation. She is a leading  advocate for the renewable energy industry in the region, having represented the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources in the Cape Wind power purchase agreement battles before the Department of Public Utilities, and helped to shape and protect the current market incentives for solar and wind development.

“It is a sincere honor to be recognized by New England Women in Energy and the Environment,” Gentleman said. “I have long-admired this esteemed organization and its members, whose passion for energy and environmental issues mirrors my own.”
