Foley Hoag Receives Perfect Score in Human Rights Campaign’s 2014 Corporate Equality Index

Foley Hoag is pleased to announce its perfect score ranking on the Human Rights Campaign's 2014 Corporate Equality Index. Businesses achieving a rating of 100 percent in the report are recognized by the Human Rights Campaign as a “Best Place to Work for LGBT Equality.”

Foley Hoag earned the 100 percent rating as a result of its commitment to four main criteria as described by Human Rights Campaign: provides equal benefits for same-sex partners and spouses; ends benefits discrimination for transgender employees and dependents; demonstrates a firmwide organizational competency on LGBT issues; and demonstrates a firmwide public commitment to the LGBT community.

Foley Hoag has been advocating for equal rights for gay, lesbian and transgender people since the mid-1990s. In 2009, the firm co-filed a federal lawsuit with Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) and other law firms to obtain federal benefits for same-sex married couples. The suit resulted in the first district court ruling striking down Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). After the ruling was appealed, the First Circuit affirmed the victory, declaring that the plaintiffs had the same federal spousal benefits as any other married couple.  Foley Hoag has also worked on many domestic violence cases involving gay and lesbian couples, and has successfully handled several cases on behalf of transgender prisoners whose civil rights were being violated.

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. By inspiring and engaging all Americans, the organization strives to end discrimination against LGBT citizens and realize a nation that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all.
