Foley Hoag partner and UN Practice Group chair Christina Hioureas received the “Attorney of the Year” award from the Hellenic Lawyers Association on November 4, 2022 at the Pierre Hotel in Manhattan. This award acknowledges Hioureas’ legal achievements as well as her commitment to Hellenism.

Previous award recipients include: U.S. Senator Bob Menendez; U.S. Ambassador to Greece John Tsunis; Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis; The Honorable Gregory Katsas, U.S. Circuit Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia; The Honorable Nicholas Tsoucalas, Senior Judge of the U.S. Court of International Trade; Nicholas Kourides, American International Group Deputy General Council; and Madeline Singas, District Attorney, Nassau County.

At Foley Hoag, Hioureas represents States, private and State-owned entities, and individuals on international disputes and public international law matters and advises States on matters before the United Nations and its bodies. She regularly serves as arbitrator in international commercial disputes. These representations have included acting for the Greek State-owned gas company in a series of arbitration disputes (spanning nine years) with the Turkish State-owned gas sales company in connection with the Greece-Turkey Interconnector Pipeline, the purpose of which was to promote “energy diplomacy” and energy diversification from Russian sources of gas. For nearly a decade, she has advised Cyprus on legal matters before the United Nations. She also represents the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese in connection with Turkey’s unilateral reconversion of the Hagia Sophia Cathedral UNESCO World Heritage Site into a mosque.  In addition to her legal representations, Hioureas serves on the Board of Directors of the Hellenic American Cultural Foundation, Cultural Heritage Management, and the Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding, in which she works to promote Greek arts, history and culture; the protection of cultural property; and religious minority rights, respectively.

The Hellenic Lawyers Association was founded to establish a network of attorneys, judges, arbitrators, and political figures of Hellenic descent and to provide opportunities for professional development. The association currently has thousands of members including attorneys, judges, political figures, and law students. Its goal is to promote professional development, legal scholarship, and to strengthen the ties to the Greek culture and the broader community.
