Foley Hoag Earns 'A' Grade on 2023 Climate Scorecard

August 03, 2023

Foley Hoag LLP is pleased to receive a top "A" grade from Law Students for Climate Accountability, a student-led organization that seeks to amplify the roles and responsibilities of the legal industry in our current climate crisis.

The organization recently released its 2023 Law Firm Climate Change Scorecard, which chronicles the climate-related work of the Vault 100 top-ranked firms in the U.S. according to how much fossil fuels work they have engaged in over a five-year period. Grades are based on firms' litigation, lobbying efforts and other legal transactions from 2018 to 2022.

For 2023, Foley Hoag was one of only five law firms to receive an “A” grade. The report calls on law firms to phase out work for the fossil fuel industry, and it seeks to support law students and lawyers who are concerned about the climate crisis.

"We formed Foley Hoag’s Energy & Climate Group almost two decades ago as a mission-oriented practice focused on supporting innovators across the clean energy and climate solutions spectrum," said partner and Energy & Climate Group Co-Chair Mark Barnett. "Our multidisciplinary practice includes start-ups pioneering technologies and business models needed to meet the climate change imperative and the largest clean energy companies in the world building major infrastructure projects. In light of that, we are pleased to be recognized for our ongoing commitment to addressing serious climate change issues on a global scale."

In addition to its work for pathbreaking clients, Foley Hoag has recently committed itself to achieve a Net Zero target by 2050, and in connection with that commitment joined the Net Zero Lawyers Alliance, a global network of law firms dedicated to providing net zero-aligned legal services and driving systemic development of commercial law in alignment with the transition to zero emissions by 2050.
