Foley Hoag Shortlisted in Financial Times Innovative Lawyers Awards Program

October 24, 2023

Foley Hoag LLP has been shortlisted by the Financial Times as part of the publication’s upcoming “Innovative Lawyers North America” 2023 awards program.

The firm was recognized in the "Innovative Lawyers in Healthcare & Life Sciences" category for launching its Reproductive Health Practice Group in response to the United States Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health. Dobbs overturned Roe v. Wade, ending the federal constitutional right to abortion. In response, Foley Hoag attorneys formed a cross-disciplinary practice group to address the legal implications for companies, healthcare providers, insurers, higher education institutions, and other organizations across the United States.

“The firm has for decades done pro bono work to protect a woman or pregnant person’s right to reproductive health care including abortion, but this is different,” said Managing Partner Jim Bucking. “A group of our lawyers recognized that corporate clients would also need to grapple with the Dobbs decision in managing their businesses and workforces. So they formed this innovative practice group. We are proud to receive this external recognition for the terrific foresight several of our partners had in creating this service.”

The Reproductive Health Practice Group was created by Foley Hoag partners Shrutih Tewarie, Thomas Barker and Christopher Escobedo Hart. The group leverages the strengths of the firm's regulatory, policy, investigations, and litigation practices.

“Our work providing strategic legal counsel to businesses since Roe v. Wade was overturned has been rewarding and demanding,” said Tewarie. “States across the country continue to legislate and use the regulatory process to impose new abortion restrictions, so we must stay alert and constantly pivot to address each new challenge that arises from this decision.”

Financial Times' “Innovative Lawyers” awards recognize outstanding leaders and individuals bringing innovation to the practice of law. The rankings and awards are based on independent research from RSGI and robust journalism from the publication. The North America 2023 final results will be announced at an awards ceremony on December 4, 2023 in New York.
