April 10, 2017
Foley Hoag LLP has been given the top ranking in Business & Human Rights Law by Chambers and Partners Global 2017. Foley Hoag, the only U.S.-based firm included in the rankings, was ranked in Band 1, the highest rating provided by Chambers. Only two other law firms worldwide were placed in the same category this year.
This is the first year that Chambers Global has ranked firms with regard to business and human rights expertise. Attorney Sarah Altschuller, the only U.S.-based attorney named in the rankings, was further singled out as “a really first-rate practitioner who is on top of a lot of this business and human rights work.”
Foley Hoag’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practice specializes in advising multinational companies, sovereign states and international organizations on corporate social responsibility, including the human rights responsibilities of business. Chambers reports that, according to clients, Foley Hoag is “a premier practice” and “very much ubiquitous in the USA for business and human rights work.” One commentator adds the firm’s “substantive knowledge is strong, and the team are all certainly people that I would identify as advisers who you would think to go to if you had a discreet issue.”
Altschuller has been a member of Foley Hoag’s CSR practice since 2003. In this role, she advises multinational companies regarding the development and implementation of human rights strategies, policies and procedures, as well as compliance with emerging legal and regulatory requirements. Altschuller provides counsel regarding engagements with socially responsible investors, government policymakers, local communities, non-governmental organizations and other key stakeholders.
