Foley Hoag is pleased to announce that life sciences patent attorney Matthew Jonsen, Ph.D., has joined the firm as a partner in its Denver office.
Jonsen handles IP issues for biotech clients across the U.S. and globally. He advises startups, emerging companies, and universities on patent prosecution, portfolio strategy, and freedom-to-operate analyses in cellular biology, genetics, gene-based therapies, and molecular biology.
“Matt’s arrival expands our practice as the first IP partner in the western region,” said IP Department Co-Chair David Halstead. “His scientific background in the biotechnology sector will be an asset to our life sciences industry group.”
Jonsen’s arrival coincides with the firm’s move into a larger office in the LoDo neighborhood this month.
“We’re glad to welcome Matt to Foley Hoag and to continue our momentum in Denver,” said Office Partner-in-Charge Rose Standifer. “This is an exciting time for our office and the firm, and Matt’s regional connections enable us to broaden the support we provide to clients in this market.”
“I was drawn to Foley Hoag by the firm’s reputation in the biotechnology space, and more recently, as an important presence in Denver,” said Jonsen. “The firm’s platform, coupled with my roots in the Colorado business community, is an exciting synergy for our clients in the mountain region and beyond.”
Jonsen holds a B.A. from the University of Colorado, Boulder; a Ph.D. from the University of Utah School of Medicine in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry; and a J.D. from the University of Denver College of Law. He joins Foley Hoag from another international law firm.
Since its
opening in 2023, Foley Hoag’s Denver office has been a key priority to widening the firm’s footprint in the western United States. The firm’s new office space, which opens this month in the LoDo Towers, is in the heart of Denver’s thriving business community. The office’s key practices reflect the growing sectors in the region, including technology, clean energy, healthcare, life sciences and cannabis.
