Foley Hoag Secures Appellate Victory for National Trust for Historic Preservation in White House Ballroom Challenge

August 07, 2026

“Nine months ago, the National Trust for Historic Preservation filed suit challenging the President’s decision to demolish the East Wing and construct a new ballroom. The courts have now ruled in the National Trust’s favor on three separate occasions, concluding that the challenged construction activity is unlawful and ordering it to stop.”

“Despite these rulings, the government has continued to charge ahead and build. Today’s decision once again confirms that no one is above the law and that the President must seek authorization from Congress before building this ballroom. We are proud to represent the National Trust for Historic Preservation in its advocacy for the American people and in holding the government accountable.”

“In light of the Court’s opinion, we urge the President to halt further construction until such time as the case has been concluded or until such time as Congress has authorized the project.” – Tad Heuer
