Foley Hoag LLP today announced the promotion of 10 lawyers to the partnership – Dr. Maya Elbert, James Gross, Dr. Ariana Harris, Stuart Knight, Kevin Lin, Emily Nash, Dr. Urszula Nowak, Leah Rizkallah, Dr. David Shore and Peter Tzeng – effective January 1, 2025.
The promoted attorneys in Foley Hoag's New York, Boston, and Washington, D.C. offices represent the firm’s areas of strategic focus, including life sciences, technology/AI, cannabis, complex litigation, higher education, and international disputes.

- Maya Elbert, Ph.D. (New York). Elbert is a patent attorney specializing in creation, strategic management, and evaluation of intellectual property assets for life sciences clients. She develops and implements global patent strategies, manages patent portfolios, prepares patent invalidity and non-infringement opinions, and leads patent landscape analyses, freedom-to-operate analyses, and patent portfolio due diligences for financings, investments, licenses and acquisitions.
- James Gross (New York). Gross is a litigator who handles complex disputes and appeals. He has argued cases before multiple federal appellate courts, and regularly represents clients in federal district court litigation.
- Ariana Harris, Ph.D. (Boston). Harris advises life sciences companies, from early- to late-stage, along with academic institutions, in intellectual property matters. Her practice includes generating and managing patent portfolios and advising on third-party intellectual property positions based on patent landscape and freedom-to-operate analysis. She also supports investors in due diligence of patent assets.
- Stuart Knight (Boston). Knight litigates complex commercial and intellectual property disputes in both the U.S. and Europe. He represents clients in patent disputes across numerous scientific and technical fields, including biotech, telecommunications, IT, sequencing, bioinformatics, polymer chemistry, and medical devices.
- Kevin Lin (Boston). Lin advises emerging technology companies in industries such as climate tech, biotech, AI, software, blockchain, and cannabis. He supports clients throughout their corporate life cycle, including matters such as early-stage formations, venture financings, commercial transactions, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate governance.
- Emily Nash (Boston). Nash focuses her practice on complex civil litigation, higher education, governmental and internal investigations, and labor and employment disputes. As Co-Chair of the firm’s Education Industry Group, Nash represents colleges and universities in civil cases, investigations, and day-to-day counseling. She also maintains a pro bono practice focused on reproductive justice and civil rights.
- Urszula Nowak, Ph.D. (Boston). Nowak focuses on biotechnology and pharmaceutical patent and trade secret litigation, as well as other biotechnology-related commercial disputes. Her law practice leverages her experience as a scientific advisor and as an industry postdoctoral fellow, informing her work in disputes over cancer immunotherapy patents and gene therapy trade secrets.
- Leah Rizkallah (Boston). Rizkallah focuses her practice on complex commercial litigation, government investigations, and high-stakes employment disputes. She represents clients in a variety of industries, including the Big Four accounting firms, financial services businesses, and pharmaceutical and biotech companies. Rizkallah maintains an active pro bono practice and is the co-founder and Vice President of the Arab American Bar Association of Massachusetts.
- David Shore, Ph.D. (Boston). Shore is a patent strategist and advisor to biotech companies developing therapeutics and diagnostics. He builds and defends patent portfolios for growing companies, navigating competitive landscapes and supporting clients across their business needs. His practice focuses on biology and genetics, emphasizing immunology, gene therapy, cell therapy, and gene editing.
- Peter Tzeng (Washington, D.C.). Tzeng advises and represents sovereign States on matters of international law and international organizations. He regularly litigates cases before the International Court of Justice, and represents States in inter-State and investor-State arbitrations. Tzeng also advises States on matters before the United Nations and other international organizations.
